Wetlands

Wetlands are critical for wildlife conservation and management. Over 40 lakes have been identified within the park and there are several others in the buffer zone including the Beeshazari Tal which is a Ramsar site as well. Meanwhile the Narayani, the Rapti and the Reu are major rivers that provide wetland habitat for fauna and flora. Lakes and riverine habitats are facing severe problem due to invasive species of plants such as Eichhornia crassipes (Jal kumbhi), Ipomoea fistulata (Besaram), Leersia hexandra (Karaute ghans) and also the lotus plant (Nelumbium nucifera). Besides there is a growing concern over river pollution due to industries, urban wastes and pesticides especially those used in fishing.

The park has been adopting following practices to manage and restore these wetlands:

  • Cleaning and weeding in lakes and oxbow lakes.
  • Excavation for clearing siltation of the lakes and water holes.
  • Construct embankments in the lakes, where it is necessary to control water leakage problem.
  • Protect Simal trees along the banks of wetlands to create nesting site for important bird species like open bill stork.

Fire line/ forest roads

For the management, conservation and protection of park and park resources fire line plays vital role in Chitwan National Park. Especially it is used for the park patrolling and wildlife monitoring inside the park as well as effective for the jungle drive to promote the wildlife tourism. Moreover, it helps to control fire in the park. Regular fire line maintenance is become useful for the over all park management.
